The great thing about photographing waterfalls is you don’t need to capture them during the golden hours with amazing light to get beautiful shots. In fact, they are often best on overcast days when the light is subdued and even. There are many photogenic waterfalls throughout New Zealand, here are just a few:
1. Whangarei Falls
Whangarei Falls is located in Whangarei Scenic Reserve. The classic curtain waterfall is part of the Hatea River and a popular swimming spot in the area. It’s roughly a 10 minute drive from Whangarei city centre.
2. McLean Falls
A must see waterfall in New Zealand, McLean Falls is a 22 metre cascade waterfall surrounded on both sides by green mossy rocks. Located in the Catlins region, it’s a 20 minute walk from the car park to the falls.
3. Bridal Veil Falls
Bridal Veil Falls, also known as the Wairēinga Falls, is a 15 minute drive from Raglan in the Waikato region. It’s an easy 10 minute walk from the car park, and there are several different viewing platforms from both the top and bottom of the falls.
4. Devil’s Punchbowl
Devils Punchbowl Falls is located in the heart of Arthur’s Pass National Park, but is very easily accessible (about half way between Christchurch and Greymouth). It’s a 30 minute walk from the car park, a bit steep towards the end but nothing too extreme.
5. Kaiate Falls
Kaiate Falls is a 25 minute drive from Tauranga. The main track leads to the top, and then to the base of the upper series of falls before continuing downhill to the lower falls.

6. Haruru Falls
Haruru Falls is a small but wide waterfall, located about 5km from Paihia.
7. Purakaunui Falls
Last but definitely not least is Purakaunui Falls. These are one of the most-photographed waterfalls in New Zealand and it’s not hard to see why. Like McLean falls, this is located in the Catlins region so it’s not one of the most accessible falls (in terms of location), but it’s well worth the effort to visit.
